What is it?
Renewable energy utilizes resources that can be replenished from and through our environment. Examples of these resources are hydro, wind and solar power, biomass and other emerging technologies. They provide an opportunity for the City to reduce its dependence on natural gas for energy as well as to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
While renewable energy sources usually offer environmental benefits, they also create environmental impacts that must be considered. In addition, they are usually higher cost than fossil fuel based energy sources, although these costs are becoming lower with ongoing commercial development.
What Can You Do?
The City of Medicine Hat is making it a little easier for its residents to install renewable energy sources.
Residential Incentive Program
- Solar Water Heating – HAT Smart incentive of $3,000
- Solar Electric – HAT Smart incentive of $6,000
Commercial Incentive Program
- HAT Smart will fund 50% of the installed cost associated with:
- Solar Thermal - solar water heating, solar air heating
- Renewable Electricity - solar photovoltaic, wind power
