Solar Electric Panel Installations - Purchase


Terms & Conditions / Eligibility

  • Available to all City of Medicine Hat residential utility customers (once during the program duration) or until program funding is exhausted

  • Receipts must be marked paid in full and dated between January 1 and December 31, 2016. Application deadline is January 6, 2017.

  • This program is for existing and new residential properties

  • Minimum installation requirement is a 1.5 kW solar electric system and must be CSA or ULC approved for installation in Canada

  • Total cost includes equipment purchases, engineering fees, permit fees, shipping, delivery, storage, installation, supplies, materials, commissioning fees, and any other costs that are relevant to the installation

  • Eligible  installations of solar photovoltaic systems (i.e. solar electric systems) will qualify for an incentive equal to 50% of the project costs to a maximum of $4,700

  • The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is not considered a part of the total project costs; therefore, HAT Smart rebates will be based on pre-tax amounts and will not exceed the amount of total project costs (before GST), regardless of the maximum listed rebate amount.


Before You Apply

  • Visit the City of Medicine Hat’s “Safety Codes Services” webpage for further details, frequently asked questions, and contact information regarding the necessary documentation, permits, and inspections required for your installation.

  • Visit the CanSIA member directory or Solar Energy Society of Alberta (SESA) to find installers/contractors serving the Medicine Hat area. Ask the installer what paperwork you are required to obtain.

Required Documentation

  • Completed application form (incomplete applications can cause a delay in payment or no payment if program funds have been exhausted);

  • Detailed receipts and invoices - must include a description of the project, total costs, system size, and proof of payment for each receipt / invoice;

  • Final Electrical Inspection obtained from the City’s Safety Codes department; and

  • Commissioning Report obtained from the City’s Electric Utility Department for applicable installations.
