Water

Water Tap

What is it?
Water is a basic necessity of life; it is not only essential for our survival, but it contributes immeasurably to the quality of our lives. The way we use water, the amount we use, and our methods of conserving it are very important for the sustainability of this resource.

Conservation:
Reduced local water use decreases the need for enlarging the capacity of water treatment infrastructure and reduces the energy required to build and operate the infrastructure. Reduced municipal water use also renders waste water treatment more efficient and offsets the need to increase the capacity of waste water treatment facilities.

Quality:
Alberta has legal responsibilities to our downstream neighbours to ensure that water is shared and delivered in the streams that cross inter-provincial boundaries. Significant and ongoing improvements to waste treatment technology have reduced the impact in recent years.

What Can You Do?
Some ways citizens can assist in the effort of water conservation and water quality are:

  • Installing low flow showerheads and aerators
  • Installing 6 litre capacity toilets or dual flush toilets
  • Landscape alternatives
  • Do not pour grease and fat down house drains. Instead, dispose of them in the garbage
  • Limit use of salt to de-ice roads and walkways
  • Use phosphorous-free laundry detergents
  • Apply today for a Community Environmental Grant supporting Water Conservation and Water Quality initiatives
